Pilot project

Power up your trips around the city

Electric BIXI pilot project

From August 15 to November 15, 2018, BIXI Montreal will be running a pilot project to test integrating electric power-assisted bicycles into our bike-sharing system. A fleet of 40 Motivate electric bikes, as well as 20 PBSC electric bikes, will be added to the BIXI network so interested users can try them out. An electric BIXI can be rented like a regular BIXI and there’s no extra cost for trips up to 30 minutes long.

Electric pedal power

With BIXI electric power-assisted bikes, users can get from one station to the next more quickly and easily. Key features of the system:

  1. 1

    Electric assist

Press the green button to start the motor and check the battery level. Next, start pedalling to activate electric assist. You don’t need to turn off the motor when you’re done using it. If the electric assist system is not used for five minutes, it automatically goes into standby mode.

  2. 2

    Drive system

    250-Watt motor

Pedal assist provides power up to 25 km/h. The harder you pedal, the more acceleration the motor provides.

  3. 3

The battery is integrated into the bike’s frame and has enough power to travel around 60 km when fully charged. Battery life may vary based on the terrain and how the bike is used. If the battery level is too low, the e-bike may be automatically locked at the dock.

  4. 4

It takes about four hours to fully charge a battery. One hour of charging provides about 15 km of battery life. Several options for recharging the e-bike batteries will be tested during this pilot.
