Power up your trips around the city

Electric BIXI pilot project

From August 15 to November 15, 2018, BIXI Montreal will be running a pilot project to test the integration of electric-assisted bicycles into the infrastructure of its bike-sharing system. A fleet of 20 electric bikes (electric BIXI) will be deployed in the BIXI network and will be available to users who would like to try them out. An electric BIXI can be rented like a regular BIXI, without additional cost for a 30-minute ride.

Electric pedal power

Adding electric-assisted bikes to the BIXI bike-sharing system will help users to get from one station to the next more quickly and easily. Key features of the system:

  1. 1

    Electric assistance

Press the green button to start the motor and check the battery level. Next, pedal to activate the electric assistance. There’s no need to turn off the motor after use. If electric assistance is not used for 5 minutes, it automatically goes into sleep mode.

  2. 2

    Drive system

    250-Watt motor

Pedal assistance up to 25 km/h. The propulsion is proportional to the user’s effort.

  3. 3

Integrated into the bike frame, the battery has enough power to travel around 60 km when fully charged. Battery life may vary based on the steepness of the terrain and conditions of use. If the battery level is too low, the e-bike may be automatically locked at the dock.

  4. 4

The time needed to fully charge a battery is about 4 hours. 1 hour of charging provides about 15 km of battery life. Several options for recharging the e-bike batteries will be tested during this pilot.
